At this point in time Opera Australia has every intention of proceeding with Mazda Opera in the Domain - La bohème this Saturday evening 2 February. Any decision to cancel will take into consideration the safety of the crowd and performers, and will be published here.
Every year Mazda Opera in the Domain attracts thousands of people and La bohème, with its irresistible music and passionate love story, is perfect for such a beautiful setting. The annual event has become a must-see experience for Sydneysiders and tourists alike. Get a group of friends together, pack a picnic and come down to the domain for a balmy summer's evening under the stars.
Puccini’s lush and romantic La bohème will appeal to those experiencing the power of opera for the first time and centres on a group of spirited bohemian friends – a poet, a philosopher, a musician and a painter. In Gale Edwards’ vivid staging they are living in Berlin in the late 1920s on the threshold of momentous social and political change. Money is tight but love is free and the chemistry between Rodolfo and Mimì inspires some of the most ravishing music ever written. Puccini’s arias are as memorable as any modern pop song, including ‘Che gelida manina’ (‘Your tiny hand is frozen’) and Musetta’s Waltz.
