Dame Joan Sutherland vividly brings to life the title role of Lucrezia Borgia in Donizetti’s powerful and lyrical opera set in dark, decadant Renaissance Italy. From the prologue’s ‘Com’ e Bello’ through to her gripping final scene of intense anguish and melodrama, Sutherland displays exquisite vocal mastery while thrilling musical balance is provided by Robert Allman as Lucrezia’s husband, the Duke of Ferarra. Richard Bonynge draws dramatic and stylish playing from the Elizabethan Sydney Orchestra and the Australian Opera Chorus.
