"Harry Joy was to die three times, but it was his first death which was to have the greatest effect on him…"Bliss is a novel which defines a generation. No-one forgets the opening line of Peter Carey’s darkly comic fable, which charts the adventures of Harry Joy, an advertising executive who, after having a close encounter with death, finds himself sucked into a Kafkaesque series of events.
On 12 March 2010 the lights go up on a new opera based on Bliss, commissioned by Opera Australia, directed by Neil Armfield, starring Peter Coleman-Wright and conducted by Elgar Howarth, who has conducted many world premieres of new works.
Brett Dean is one of the most exciting composers to have emerged in the world of classical music in recent years. His music is by turns fascinating, atmospheric and disarmingly beautiful. Amanda Holden is an award-winning translator and librettist who has written more than fifty works for the stage.
The combination of Brett Dean’s music, Amanda Holden’s words and Peter Carey’s kaleidoscopic imagination is a potent one. Add in the directorial vision of Neil Armfield, and the electrifying stage presence
of Peter Coleman-Wright, and this new production will be dynamite.
