Inspired by the vision of Fred Street AM, OperaEd began in 1999 with the vision of bringing opera to young people by providing a learning opportunity outside of the reach of most of these students.  Schools participating in OperaEd are identified as being in areas of socio-economic disadvantage and high need.  Through Opera Australia’s on-going dedication in this area strong partnerships continue to be forged with contributing schools consolidating the foundations of this work.

OperaEd invites young people to explore and participate in the entire process of creating opera.  This project provides a snapshot of all the elements involved in developing and staging opera productions on a grand scale.

In 2010 more than 120 students will participate in the two project days, which include a tour of the opera centre in Surry Hills, a drama workshop, a student concert, the opportunity to meet opera production staff, musicians and singers plus see an opera performance at the Sydney Opera House.  A financial component has also been added, with Barclays Capital facilitating a workshop in which students allocate an opera budget.
