Opera Australia employs over 300 permanent artists and staff, and up to 1000 seasonal and casual employees in any one year.
Performers – principal singers, choristers, orchestral players, dancers, children's chorus and opera extras are engaged after an audition process. Look out for notices of forthcoming auditions for the various categories of artist in mainstream papers.
You may also send a CV and cover letter informing us of the area you wish to audition in at any time, and we will include you on a mailing list for general auditions.
Many Sydney-based principals, chorus, production and support administration staff tour to Melbourne for our Spring and Autumn seasons. Others are engaged in Melbourne specifically for the seasons there. Some artists, orchestral players and production staff are engaged for the regional and schools tours performances of Oz Opera, our touring arm.
As well as performers we employ staff in three main areas:
Artistic and music, including artist management and planning, orchestral management, music and language coaching
Technical, including stage management and mechanists, lighting, props, wardrobe, wigs & make-up, stores, scenery and props manufacturing, and wigs and wardrobe manufacturing
Administration, including customer service, finance, marketing, media, development, education, human resources and general administration.
Most staff are based at The Opera Centre in Sydney with a smaller number at the Melbourne Opera Centre and at our stores at separate locations in both cities.
