This new project between the Australian Opera and Ballet Orchestra (AOBO) and the NSW Regional Conservatoriums was a unique opportunity to introduce regional students to opera orchestral playing and repertoire, work with the AOBO and to come to Sydney for a three day immersion experience.
The project began with Students learning opera excerpts and participating in video-linked master-classes with musicians from the AOBO. The students then all gathered in Sydney followed was a 3 day Sydney immersion experience, 13 – 15 September 2012 with sessions at the Sydney Opera House and Opera Australia’s Opera Centre in Surry Hills, Sydney.
Activities in Sydney included meeting AOBO musicians face to face; ensemble rehearsals; rehearsing with an Opera Australia conductor; observing rehearsals of Opera Australia’s current production of Madama Butterfly; and playing in the pit at the Sydney Opera House.
