JOHN LONGMUIR

 


John Longmuir was born in Edinburgh, Scotland.  His interest in music began with musical theatre but, after studying at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (where his appearances included Don Basilio in Le Nozze di Figaro, Old Don/Jew in Candide and tenor soloist in Mozart’s Coronation Mass), John was accepted into the Australian Opera Studio from which he graduated with Merit in 2008.

His awards encompass all of Australia's major Eisteddfods and competitions including the Royal Schools Music Competition, Fremantle Eisteddfod and the Alcoa Australia Singing Competition.  In 2009, John won the prestigious Herald Sun Aria, the Opera and Arts Support Group Scholarship and placed second in the Australian National Eisteddfod and the ‘More than Opera’German-Australian Opera Grant.  He was also a finalist in the McDonald’s Operatic Aria and the Opera Foundation Australia's AUDI German Award.

John's operatic repertoire includes Ismaele in Nabucco, The Witch in Hänsel und Gretel, the title role in Stravinsky’s Mavra, Arbace inIdomeneo, Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi, Guillot Morfontaine in Manon, Brighella in Ariadne auf Naxos, First Armed Man in Die Zauberflöte, Remendado in Carmen, Rodriguez in Don Quichotte, Constable Smith in Weill’s Die Dreigroshenoper, Dr Blind in Die Fledermaus, Tapioca in Chabrier’s L'Etoile,Pittichinaccio in Les Contes d'Hoffmann, Le Diable in Ibert’s Angelique as well as a numerous Gilbert and Sullivan tenor roles.  In 2007, John created the role of Papa in the world premiere of Rosetta by Australian composer Frank Wood. 

Appearances on the concert platform have included Handel's Israel in Egypt with the Berliner Cappella and Fauré’s La Naissance de Venus at the Konzerthaus Berlin as well as concert appearances in Italy.  John has given Lieder recitals for various organisations as well as for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.  He has been an emerging artist with the Lieder Society of Western Australia, has performed as tenor soloist with the Fremantle Chamber Orchestra and was invited to Tokyo to appear in concert for the International Foundation for Arts and Culture.

In 2011 and 2012, John Longmuir is a Young Artist with Opera Australia. For the national company, he sings Tamino in The Magic Flute, Count Almaviva in The Barber of Seville, Camille in The Merry Widow, The Italian Singer in Capriccio, Nadir in The Pearl Fishers, Snout in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the Fourth Jew in Salome
