Mezzo-soprano Sian Pendry studied in Melbourne at the Victorian College of the Arts, where she completed a Bachelor of Music Performance in Voice (Honours). Following this, she attained a Graduate Diploma of Music (Opera), at the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University, performing the roles of La Zelatrice in Suor Angelica, Cupid in Venus and Adonis, and The Shining One, Cup Bearer and Angel of the Lord in The Pilgrim’s Progress.
Sian won the National Aria in 2002 and has twice been a finalist in the McDonalds Aria competition as well as being awarded the Tinkler Encouragement prize in the Australian Singing Competition, Mathy Awards. She was a vocal finalist in the 2001 ABC Symphony Australia Young Performers Awards, and has been the recipient of scholarships from Rotary, the Linda Edith Allen Estate, the Austral Salon and the Mabel Kent Estate.
In 2003, Sian was a Developing Artist and chorus member with Opera Queensland and completed an intensive Italian course at the Istituto Europeo in Florence, Italy.
Sian was a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera awards in 2004 and took part in the first performance of a new work based on the life of Eugene Goossens, Eugene and Roie, for the Sydney Festival. Later in the year she sang Hansel in Pacific Opera’s production of Hansel and Gretel. In 2005 Sian featured in Sydney Philharmonia’s series of Bach concerts, broadcast on ABC Classic FM.
Sian became a member of Opera Australia’s Moffatt Oxenbould Young Artists’ Development Program in 2007. Since then, shehas sung a number of roles for Opera Australia including Second Lady (Die Zauberflöte), Dorabella (Così Fan Tutte),
Hansel (Hansel and Gretel), Stephano (Romeo and Juliet), Annio (La Clemenza di Tito), Kitchen Boy (Rusalka), Mercedes (Carmen)and the title role in Carmen for OzOpera’s Northern Territory and West Australian tour.
In 2008, Sian made her debut with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in the role of Mary (The Flying Dutchman) with Oleg Caetani and the following year sang in Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream with the Sydney Symphony under Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Sian’s performances in 2010 included The Dream of Gerontius with Sydney Philharmonia Choirs and the roles of Hermia in Britten’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro for Opera Australia.
2011 performances include Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Mercedes in Carmen, Valencienne in The Merry Widow and Iris/Female Chorus in The Love of the Nightingale for Opera Australia, along with Opera Australia’s performance at the Poly Theatre in Beijing for the Meet in Beijing Arts Festival and performances in Opera Australia’s Great Opera Hits on a Sunday Afternoon throughout the summer at the Sydney Opera House.
Sian’s 2012 roles include Dorabella in Cosi fan Tutte, Suzuki in Madama Butterfly, Hermia in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Herodias inSalome, Second Lady in The Magic Flute for Opera Australia and she will return to Sydney Philharmonia to sing the alto solos in the St Matthew Passion.
