Shane Lowrencev was born in Melbourne and, in 2000, graduated from the Melba Memorial Conservatorium with a Bachelor of Music. He furthered his studies at The Australian National Academy of Music and at The Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London.
While studying at the Melba, Shane received the Robert Salzer Scholarship Award for Operatic Potential as well as a Victoria University Scholarship. In 2008, he won the Opera Awards featuring the Youth Music Foundation of Australia Inc Award.
Shane is a full-time principal artist with Opera Australia. His roles have included – The King: Aida, Polyphemus: Acis and Galatea, Guglielmo: Così fan tutte, Capellio in I Capuleti e i Montecchi. Ferrando: Il Trovatore, Baron Douphol: La Traviata, Cascada: Merry Widow, Armoured Man: Die Zauberflöte, Cook: Love For Three Oranges, Dick Deadeye: HMS Pinafore, Usher: Trial By Jury, Filiberto: Il Signor Bruschino, Pistol: Falstaff, Keeper of the Madhouse: The Rake’s Progress, Timur/Mandarin: Turandot, Monterone: Rigoletto, Sergeant of Police: Pirates of Penzance, Betto di Signa: Gianni Schicchi, Basilio: Il barbiere di Siviglia, Melisso: Alcina, Zuniga: Carmen, Lodovico: Otello, Nourabad: The Pearlfishers, Evangelist/Shepherd: The Pilgrim’s Progress. He has also performed Colline in La bohème for West Australian Opera.
Shane has enjoyed a distinguished career on the concert platform having performed the bass solos in Handel’s Judas Maccabaeus, Messiah, La Resurrezione; Mendelssohn’s Elijah, Mozart’s Requiem, Mass in C Minor, Coronation Mass and Missa Brevis; Bach’s B Minor Mass, Sleepers Wake Cantata No.140, St John Passion, Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio and St Matthew Passion; Haydn’s Creation; Schubert’s Missa Brevis.
For Opera Australia in 2010/2011, Shane sang the title roles in Le nozze di Figaro and Don Giovanni, Escamillo in Carmen, Schaunard in La bohème and principal bass roles in Bliss, La Traviata, La fanciulla de West and A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
In 2012, Shane Lowrencev sang Mozart’s Figaro and the 1st Nazarene in a new production of Salome for Opera Australia; he also appeared in concert in Melbourne and Auckland. In 2013, he performs Schaunard for Opera Australia and as Fafner in their production of Der Ring des Nibelungen.
