HYESEOUNG KWON

 

Hyeseoung Kwon graduated from Seoul’s Han-Yang University with a Bachelor of Vocal Music in 1995. She moved to Italy to pursue vocal and opera performance studies at the Conservatorium of Milan and the Vercelli Academy during which time she  performed with the Orchestra of Milan with conductors Riccardo Chailly and Romano Gandolfi in Rossini’s Petite Messe Solenelle, Poulenc’s Gloria, Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 and Rossini’s Stabat Mater.

Hyeseoung relocated to Australia and became a member of Opera Queensland’s Young Artist Programand subsequently joined Opera Australia’s Young Artist Program in 2005. She also participated in masterclasses and workshops with Joshua Hecht, Peter Robinson, Andrew Sinclair, Anna Sweeny, Elizabeth Connell and Dennis O’Neill.

In 2002, Hyeseoung was winner of the Australian Singing Competition’s prestigious Opera Award and the MBS Young Performers Award. The following year, she performed the role of Zerlina in Opera Queensland’s production of Don Giovanni to enthusiastic critical acclaim, returning in 2008 to sing Liù in Turandot.

Hyeseounghas performed many of the major lyric soprano roleswith Opera Australia including Nannetta (Falstaff), Pamina (The Magic Flute), Liù (Turandot), Countess (The Marriage of Figaro), Konstanze (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Oberto and the title role (Alcina), Siren (Rinaldo), Genovieffa (Suor Angelica), Lauretta (Gianni Schicchi), Mimì (La bohème), Leila (The Pearlfishers), Frasquita and Micaëla (Carmen), Dorinda (Orlando), Giulietta (I Capuleti e i Montecchi) and Fiordiligi (Così fan tutte), Heavenly Being 1 and Soprano Solo (The Pilgrim’s Progress) and special performances as Micaëla in Carmen for Opera Australia in Taipei. She has been a soloist for Opera in the Vineyards, Stanthorpe Queensland, Mimì in Oz Opera’s tour of La bohème, and sung in Mozart’s Requiem in addition to numerous concerts and recitals in Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Melbourne.

Hyeseoung was nominated for Helpmann and Greenroom Awards in 2008 and 2009.

Roles for Opera Australia in 2011 include Micaëla in Carmen, Mimì in La bohème and Donna Anna in Don Giovanni. Hyeseoung also appears with Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in Carmina Burana and with Sydney Philharmonia in Missa Solemnis this year.

Hyeseoung’s 2012 engagements include Pamina in The Magic Flute and Liú in Turandot both for Opera Australia
