Andrew Moran

Melbourne Baritone Andrew Moran completed a Bachelor of Music at the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts in 2003 and subsequently enrolled in the Graduate Diploma in Music (Opera Studies) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, where he sang Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte.

While studying in Perth, Andrew made numerous appearances with the Academy including as Simone in Gianni Schicchi, Ottone in L’incoronazione di Poppea, Olin Blitch in Floyd’s Susannah, Frank Maurrant in Street Scene and Orféo in Monteverdi’s L’Orféo. In 2001 he made his debut with West Australian Opera as Count Almaviva in the schools production of The Marriage of Figaro. Subsequently, he sang the roles of the Customs Official in La bohème, Plumeaux in the world premiere of Nostradamus, and the Maitre d’Hotel in The Merry Widow, as well as being a chorus member in La bohème, Nostradamus, Il Trovatore, The Merry Widow, Cavalleria Rusticana, I Pagliacci and Opera in the Park.

During this period he also became a regular guest soloist with St George’s Cathedral where he sang Messiah (Handel), Petite Messe Solenelle (Rossini), Mass in C Minor (Mozart), Mass in A Major and Christmas Oratorio (Bach), Five Mystical Songs (Vaughan Williams), and the Requiems of Fauré, Duruflé, Michael Haydn and Mozart.

Andrew has considerable experience as a recitalist, having performed for WA Lieder Society, the Giovanni Consort (Schumann’s Dichterliebe), Alliance Francaise (Poulenc’s La Bal Masque) as well as having recorded a recital for the ABC Young Australia Series. He has also been the recipient of numerous scholarships notably in the Mathy Awards at the Australian Singing Competition where he was awarded the Phoebe Patrick Award and the Goethe Institute Award, the Royal Overseas League Music Bursary, the Britten-Pears Aldeburgh Young Artist Program Award, the Glyndebourne Festival Prize and the 4MBS Classic FM Award.

In 2005 he returned to WA Opera to sing the role of Morales in Carmen. Andrew was also the baritone soloist at Opera in the Vineyard, Stanthorpe and in Israel in Egypt for Macquarie University and the St John Passion for Sydney Philharmonia.  That year, he joined Opera Australia.

Andrew’s roles since then include the Messenger in La traviata, the Gamekeeper in Rusalka, Dr Bartolo in The Barber of Seville, Amantio di Nicolao in Gianni Schicchi, Antonio in The Gondolier, Christian in Un Ballo in Maschera, Morales in Carmen, Herald in Otello, First Mate in Billy Budd, Papageno in The Magic Flute and Yamadori and the Imperial Commissioner in Madama Butterfly.

Most recently Andrew performed the roles of Papageno in The Magic Flute, Mr Lindquist in A Little Night Music, Ned Keene in Peter Grimes, Starveling in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Sciarrone in Tosca, Sid in La Fanciulla del West, Marullo in Rigoletto, Demetrius in A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Sharpless in Madama Butterfly for Opera Australia and returned to WA Opera to sing Zurga in The Pearlfishers.

Andrew’s 2011 performances includeDr Bartolo in The Barber of Seville and Marcello in La bohème for Opera Australia and his 2012 engagements include Ping in Turandot, Dr Bartolo in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Starveling in A Midsummer Nights Dream, Sharpless in Madama Butterfly, Cappadocian in Salome for Opera Australia and Pooh Bah in The Mikado for Opera Queensland.
